SALMOGEN BIOSECURITY
Health and Biosecurity by Design
SalmoGen operates within a land-based aquaculture campus at the University of Maine's Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR). Our indoor recirculating aquaculture facilities are designed around compartmentalization, secure and protected water systems, and rigorous biosecurity protocols, providing a controlled environment for year-round production of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) broodstock and high-quality eggs.
All operational decisions at SalmoGen prioritize the health and welfare of our fish. We are committed to providing the highest standard of care, including appropriate environmental conditions that allow our fish to thrive, grow, and remain healthy. Our responsibility extends beyond meeting their essential needs to ensuring that every fish is treated with care and respect. Every employee shares in this commitment and plays an important role in upholding our fish welfare standards.
Qualified Supplier
Verified Health Status
SalmoGen operates under a comprehensive Fish Health and Welfare Management Plan that establishes veterinary oversight, routine health monitoring, and regulatory inspections of onsite fish cohorts and broodstock during spawning. Our fish health status is independently validated and supported by Kennebec River Biosciences (KRB), a USDA-accredited aquatic animal diagnostic laboratory and veterinary service provider. SalmoGen also operates its U.S.-based facilities as a Registered Aquaculture Export Facility (RAEF) under the oversight of USDA-APHIS, the competent authority for finfish aquaculture establishments in the United States.

HIGHLY CONTROLLED
Protected Environment
SalmoGen operates within a protected and highly controlled aquaculture environment designed to safeguard fish health and maintain consistent production conditions. Dedicated wells provide secure groundwater to each aquaculture compartment, while controlled water systems, physical separation, and purpose-built infrastructure help minimize exposure risks and maintain strict control over the production environment. A dedicated team of RAS specialists and maintenance personnel ensures the reliable operation, preventive maintenance, and performance of critical equipment and life-support systems across the campus.
